The Interview

Dr. Susie, do you remember your very first day here? What were your student years like 16 years ago?

Dr. Susie: Oh, of course! Back then, we had the TACIT International Transfer Program (TACIT), which prepared students for study in the United States. You know what I remember best? We didn’t have an elevator back then! Imagine carrying everything up to the third floor by hand. But the atmosphere was always as warm as it is now.

How did your story with Taiwan Adventist College begin?

Dr. Susie: It all started with one boy; he needed special care and love. We moved from Taichung to Yuchi specifically to look after him. And at that time, the TACIT program needed a helper. I felt it was an opportunity to serve God through education.

What has kept you at the BBD faculty for so long?

Dr. Susie: I love working with young people! Before moving here, I taught at several universities, but here I can be more than just a teacher and mentor. I enjoy sharing stories from my observations and how God has changed my life with students. This is what gives my work meaning.

Can you share your “God moment”?

Dr. Susie: It was the moment we decided to move to Yuchi. We had lived in Taichung for over 30 years; our entire lives, friends, and our children’s school were there. But God called us, and after prayer, we decided to trust His promises. In just three days, we came together and developed a plan. And you know, God is truly faithful—living here has been a blessing for us.

What’s the most common mistake students make today, and how can we avoid it?

Dr. Susie: I’ll be blunt: it’s addiction to games and the internet. Many students are so immersed in their phones that they stop interacting with people in person. This leads to a loss of social skills. My advice: take advantage of our campus! We have an amazing environment, great friends, and a vibrant spiritual life. Help each other, connect, and don’t let screens replace the real world.

Which Bible verse is resonating with you the most right now?

Dr. Susy: Hebrews 4:16 :

Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].

That is what always supports me.
